How Essential Oils Work
You see, our senses connect us to the world and allow us
to respond to our environment. Essential oils fill our senses
and triggers physiological and psychological responses in
our bodies. Pure essential oils are rapidly absorbed or inhaled
in your system and rush directly to their targets. Each plant
and it's oil targets a specific function.
THE SENSE OF SCENT
Fragrance is the substance of memories. One whiff of a childhood aroma can set the memory in motion, bringing back thoughts, faces, and feelings long forgotten. How does this happen? Fragrance consists of volatile molecules that float in the air. Millions of olfactory receptor cells line the nose. Aroma causes these nerves to fire and send messages to the limbic area of the brain. From there, the messages travel to other parts of the brain, activating thought and memory. The pituitary gland is also stimulated to release chemical messages that travel via the blood to glands and organs that create physical body responses. Hence a scent has the power to activate a number of physical and emotional responses. And it all happens in less than a second!
THE SENSE OF TOUCH
Because of their molecular structures, essential oils are rapidly absorbed when applied to the skin. Silky smooth to the touch, they penetrate the outer layer of skin. It is often possible to smell some oils on the breath shortly after applying them to the body. Upon reaching the dermal layer of skin, essential oils lead to different effects, depending on the type of oil applied.
THE SENSE OF ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils - non-greasy yet soft and soothing - are different from common vegetable oils. The pure essence of a plant, lost in the normal processing of herbs and flowers, is captured in essential oils. Pure essential oils are rapidly absorbed or inhaled, and rush directly to their targets. The quick distribution of essential oils results in a rapid response.
Young Living Essential Oils brings you the therapeutic scents
of nature, captured in bottles as pure oil. Personal care
products, supplements, and a number of essentials for everyday
living are created with these unadulterated oils. Let the
aroma of our oils revitalize you physically, mentally, and
spiritually in a way that only nature can.

How to use Essential Oils
There are three basic ways to use essential oils: inhalation, topical application, and internal consumption.
1 Inhalation
The inhalation of essential oils heightens the senses and can trigger numerous desired responses in the body. Here are several techniques used to inhale essential oils:
ONE - Direct inhalation - simply smell them.
TWO - Diffuse the oils using a Young Living diffuser which disperses the oil in a micro-fine vapor into the air. The Young Living diffuser will not heat the oils, thus ensuring full benefits, as extreme heat can damage important constituents in the oil.
THREE - Fill a humidifier with water. Put a tissue or small cloth, sprinkled with a few drops of oil, in front of the escaping steam. (Do not put oil in your humidifier. It will float on top of the water instead of rising with the water vapor and may cause damage to your humidifier.)
FOUR - Carefully pour hot water into a bowl and add a few drops of oil. Cover your head wand bowl in a tent-like fashion with a towel. Breathe deeply and slowly.
2 Topical Application
Apply essential oils directly onto the skin where indicated. Key points of application on the body are:
Crown of head |
Upper back |
Forehead |
Abdomen |
Temples |
Over vital organs |
Behind ears |
Soles and top of feet |
Neck |
Ankles |
To apply topically on any of these areas, follow these simple steps:
- Carefully tip the oil bottle and drop 2-3 drops in the palm of the hand or directly on the desired application area.
- If dropping oil in your hand, rub palms together in a circular motion and then massage oil onto desired point of application. If applying directly to the desired area, use your hand to massage the oil in a circular motion into the skin. Repeat if desired.
ATTENTION: Essential oils are very potent, and some ay be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply pure vegetable oil to the area to dilute. Please read label directions for each individual oil before using.
3 Internal Consumption
Research indicates that some oils are more effective when taken orally. Only pure essential oils, proven safe and labeled as dietary supplements, should be used internally. Dilution and dosage is dependent on the age, size, and the health constitution of the individual. Follow the recommended dosage on individual product labels to ensure safety or seek the advice of a health professional before administering oils internally.
Suggested internal consumption methods:
ONE - Put several drops of oil into an empty capsule and swallow with water.
TWO - Add 1-2 drops to a glass of water or rice milk.
THREE - Put 1-2 drops onto a piece of bread or add to your meals when cooking.
FOUR - Add 1-2 drops onto a teaspoon of Blue Agave.
FIVE - Drop directly onto the tongue and swallow. Exercise extreme caution when using this method. Many oils are very strong and should be tested by pouring a single drop onto a spoon and tasting a small portion -- 1/4 of a drop -- to determine the amount of oil to be used.
